More than 120 MPs have now signed a parliamentary motion in support of the Make the Connection campaign. Although the motion is unlikely to ever be debated in the House of Commons it is a clear indication to the Department of Trade and Industry and Ofgem, the regulator, that there is cross-party support for small businesses and anger at the problems they face in the energy market.
Early Day Motion 251 was tabled by the Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, Jenny Willott on 22 November and reads as follows:
That this House welcomes Make the Connection, the joint campaign by energywatch and the Federation of Small Businesses to get a better deal for small businesses from the energy market; recognises that small businesses get far less protection from regulation and industry codes of practice than domestic energy consumers, which can lead to them experiencing significant problems in the market; notes that incidences of mis-selling by energy suppliers such as those highlighted in the BBC's Watchdog programme on 24th October 2006 can cause particular detriment to small businesses due to the lack of a cooling-off period in business energy contracts; and calls on business energy suppliers to acknowledge and address this situation and to recognise the importance of small businesses as energy customers, as they spend more than £3 billion each year on gas and electricity.
The list of MPs who have signed can be seen on the House of Commons website. If your MP has not signed the motion yet why not write to him or her and ask them to do so?
